The idea to create the first establishment for medical specialists' improvement,
belonged to two people with different social statuses: the member of the Russian
Tsar family Duchess Elena Pavlovna, who was in charge of all medical establishments
of the Russian capital and a well-known Professor of Medical-Surgical Academy
E.E. Eihwald - organiser and the first Director of Academy.
The Clinical Institute of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna was opened on June
3, 1885. In 1924 it was renamed into the Leningrad State Institute of Postgraduate
Education for Physicians, and in 1993 it was transformed into the Medical Academy
of Postgraduate Studies (ST.-PETERSBURG MAPS).
Now the Academy is one of the leading institutes in Russia
for physicians' training. It contains 78 Departments located on the basis of
14 Research Institutes and 63 large medical establishments.
