The College was founded in 1936. It comprises of 18 Departments. The Deans of the College at different times were Professor E.I. Zukerman (1936-1938), Associate Professor I.M. Ginzburg, Professor N.V. Sibirkin (1938-1975), Professor M.D. Mazurenko (1975-1984), Professor M.S. Greimer (1984-1994), Professor A.Y. Baranovsky (1994-1997). In 1997 N.M. Zhulev was elected the Dean of the College.

41 Professors work at the Departments of the College, among them 17 are the Heads of the Departments.

The overwhelming majority of the lecturers studied at the Institute, passed clinical studies, postgraduate course of study and correspondence postgraduate courses.

The educational process is carried out in the leading medical establishments, research and development institutes, dispensaries and polyclinics of the city. The Departments use widely the up-to-date forms of training in educational process, directed to intensification of teaching and advertisement of the newest advances of medical science. The different forms of testing of students' knowledge are used and the computer testing takes the leading position in the recent years. The training of clinical interns was activated. More than 100 well-trained clinical interns graduate from the College every year.

Intensive research work is carried out in the Departments of the College.

In the recent years complex scientific works of several Departments, labs, scientific establishments are carried out and 7-8 candidate (Ph.D.) and 4-5 doctoral theses are defended annually.

The Departments are actively engaged in international activity. About 40 agreements treaties of cooperation with foreign firms have been signed. The amount of grants has increased from 3 in 1997 up to 7 in 1999. About 20 members of the Departments have been trained abroad in management and speciality. The staff of the Departments of faculties provides constant consultations and organizational help to the Committee of Public Health of St.-Petersburg Administration and doctors of basic medical centers. The Heads of the Departments and Professors of the Departments of Infectious Diseases, Neuropathology, Needle Reflexotherapy, Therapy, Physiotherapy, Phthisiology are the main experts of the Committee of Public Health. The Head of the Department of Narcology is the Head of the Department of Public Health of Leningrad Oblast.

The primary aims of the College are determined by issues of the Academy: selection and training of the staff and reserve for substitution of scientific and teaching positions; Improvement of educational process at the Departments; iImprovement of quality and efficiency of scientific research; Improvement of medical-diagnosis process in clinics of the Academy; activation of international cooperation; development of self-supporting activities of the Departments of the College.

The Department was formed on the basis of the Department of Clinical Dietology in 1991. It provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement for gastroenterologists, therapeutists, dieticians and doctors, responsible for clinical nutrition in medical and prophylactic establishments: "Diagnosis and Treatment of Illnesses of Digestisy of Organs", "Gastroenterology", "Selected Issues of Gepathology", "Selected Issues of Dietology", etc., and also certificate courses in such specialties as "Gastroenterology" and "Dietology". Training in clinical studies and doctoral programs as gastroenterology and dietology, intern programs - in general therapy are conducted at the Department. The main scientific directions are: study of possibility of prediction, specific features of the processing disease, development of new methods of diagnosis and treatment of peptic ulcer and diseases of liver; study of immunomorphological processes of disease development and outcome of chronic diseases of liver; automation of diagnosis, medical and preventive activity of gastroenterologists' work; search and introduction of new forms of stationary and post- stationary rehabilitation of patients with diseases of digestive organs; development of new principles of personalizing of medical and prophylactic feeding in case of diseases of gastrointestinal tract. During 5 years 1445 physicians (among them 11 clinical interns and 19 interns), 3 candidates of Medical Science (Ph.D.) were trained. 4 monographs, 50 articles and 2 manuals for students were published.

First time in the Russian Federation the training in geriatrics was started in January, 1980 at the course of geriatrics at the Department of Therapy N 3. In 1986 the independent Department of Geriatrics was organized. Different courses of general and thematic improvements for the geriatrists, therapeutists and narrow experts of therapeutic structure are conducted at the Department. The greatest popularity reached "Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of Internal Organs of Elderly and Senile Age Patients", "Therapy (Gerontology and Geriatrics)", "Geriatric Cardiology and Nephrology". Within the framework of the mentioned courses, since 1995, the training of the medical staff has been conducted. At the Department of Geriatrics the courses of general improvement are also conducted with passing an examination on the Certificate of Expert for physicians (geriatrists, therapeutists) and the medical staff. The main scientific direction of the Department is both research of vascular, digestive systems and kidneys of elderly and senile age patients (clinical morphological and medical social research). During 5 years 1247 physicians were prepared. 5 monographs, 18 articles and 10 educational and methodical manuals were published.

This Department was formed in 1886. It provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement for dermatovenerologists and physicians of general practice, including: "Dermatological Diagnosis of Systemic and Chronic Infectious Diseases", "Illnesses Transmitted by Sexual Way", etc., as well as certificate courses in speciality "Dermatovenerology". The main scientific directions are: study of efficiency of photohematotherapy in case of different dermal diseases, revealing of pathogenic features of pruritic dermatoses of neurogenic genesis and possibilities of their treatment by methods of neuroregular therapy; research of vegetative, vascular, hormonal and immunological violations in patients with onychomycoses and development of pathogenic reasonable therapy of this disease. The Department was formed in 1988. The programs of training of experts in residency, clinical studies and postgraduate courses have been developed and put into practice. The Department was formed in 1893. On the main base of the Department training in the courses of general and thematic improvement is provided for neuropathologists. In 1990 the course of training for physicians in vertebroneurology with principles of manual therapy was opened. The Department also provides training at the certificate courses in specialties "Neurology" and "Manual Therapy". The main scientific directions of the Department are: study of heritable nervous - muscle diseases, myasthenia, diseases and trauma of peripheral nervous system. The Department was formed in 1987. It provides training in the courses of thematic improvement for pulmanologists, therapeutists, phtisiatrists, and also certificate courses in speciality "Pulmanology". For the first time in the country the original two - weeks course of training of physicians, working in asthma - school is carried out. The main scientific directions are: chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, acute pneumonia (rate, clinical-function and laboratory performance, peculiarities, prophylaxis and treatment); asthma with high risk of death; inpatient and outpatient asthma - schools. The Department was formed in 1885 and for more than 100 years of existence it has saved general therapeutic structure. The Department was headed by such well-known clinicians therapeutists of Russia as E.E. Eihwald, M.I. Afanasyev, D.Ya. Romanovsky, G.F. Lang, K.N. Georgievsky. In 1997 the name of E.E. Eihwald was given to the Department. It provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement for therapeutists, nefrologists, rheumatologists, deputies of the head physicians and managers of departments, homeopathists. Traditional for the Department are the courses in therapy, examinations of quality of medical care and temporary incapacity of work, rheumatology, as well as certificate courses in specialties "Therapy", "Rheumatology", "Allergology and Immunology". The Department has a basic clinical base in the main historical building for 85 beds and medical base in municipal hospitals N 17 and N 25, Regional clinical hospital, hospital N 18 and hospital for treatment of war invalids. Annually 20 to 30 clinical interns postgraduates are trained at the Department. The scientific interests of the Department are: study of actual problems of cardiology and rheumatology. The scientific direction in cardiology includes development of the problem of immunological disorders in pathogenesis of ischemic coronary heart disease, as well as approaches to tactics of treatment of this disease with the use of specimens of systemic ensimotherapy. Study of pathogenic processes of the most wide-spread rheumatic diseases (pseudorheumatism, systemic lupus erythematosus, reactive arthritis, osteoarthrosis, osteoporosis etc.) includes reorganization of immunological regulation, as well as significance of biochemical markers at cell-like and subcell-like levels. The designed algorythms of diagnosis, improved schemes of treatment are embedded into practice of number of specialized departments of the hospitals of the city and regions of the Russian Federation. The main directions of study of the secondary immunodeficit in broad presence of therapeutic diseases are concerned with revealing features and general regularities of development of immunity disorder in these forms of pathology. During five years the Department have prepared 4978 physicians, 9 candidates (Ph.D.) and 7 Doctors of Medical Science. 6 monographs, 2 manuals, 155 articles and 20 manuals were published.

The Department was formed in 1976. Initially it was called the Department of Therapy N 3 and was oriented on training physicians of Leningrad. In 1997, because of the expansion of the subjects taught in the courses of improvement, it was transformed into the Department of Therapy and Clinical Pharmacology. The educational work of the Department includes certificate courses in therapy, courses of thematic improvement in diagnosis and treatment of internal organs diseases. Since 1999 the training at certificate courses in clinical pharmacology has been conducted. For the last five years 1717 physicians have passed the training. Alongside with the training of the physicians, the training in clinical studies program is conducted. During five years 32 clinical interns were trained. At postgraduate courses 6 postgraduates have passed the training. The scientific research of the Department was dedicated to study of adaptation-compensatory processes of chronic diseases of internal organs. Within the framework of psychosomatic research the clinical - pharmacological analysis of peculiar usage of psychotropic drugs for patients with visceral pathology is carried out. As a result of the research there were 5 candidate (Ph.D.) and 1 Doctoral thesis, 5 collective monographs, 12 magazine articles and 68 articles in collection of materials of conferences. Medical base of the Department is Municipal hospital N 26 for 1200 beds. All specialized therapeutic departments are presented at the hospital. It allows to introduce the new medical and diagnostic methodic to carry out the the educational process on the high level of teaching.

In 1924 the Department of Pulmonary Tuberculosis was organized, which was transformed into the Department of Phthisiopulmanology in 1980. Since 1999 it is the Department of Phthisiology. The scientific activity of the Department is directed to the development of issues of epidemiology and prevention of tuberculosis, organization of anti- tuberculosis work and improving of its methods. Last years the Department deals with the study of specific features of the course and treatment of acute progressive forms of tuberculosis of respiratory organs. The combination of tuberculosis of respiratory organs and nonspecific diseases of lungs is also a subject of scientific research of the Department. The Department provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement on the main problems of phthisiatry: "Phthisiatry", "Phthisiopulmanology", "Tuberculosis in Practice of Therapeutists and Physicians of General Practice", "Tuberculosis in the System of Obligatory Medical Insurance", "Tuberculosis and Concomitant Accompanying Diseases", "Tuberculosis of Children and Teenages" and others for phthisiatrists, therapeutists, pulmanologists, family doctors and physicians of general practice, as well as provides certificate courses in speciality "Phthisiology". Annually 2-3 clinical interns are trained at the Department. During 5 years 2140 doctors, 3 candidates (Ph.D.) and 2 Doctors of Medical Science were trained. 68 articles were published.

The main scientific directions are: endocrinological aspects of andrology; sugar Diabetes mellitus and its complications; study of peculiarities of metabolism of corticosteroids in case of different diseases of adrenal glands; study of problems of pathogenesis, development of methods of treatment of thyroid gland diseases; candidosis and endocrine system.
