The College was founded on October 19, 1936 by the Decree of the National Commissioner of Public Health of RSFSR N 95.

The basis for organization of the College was the necessity for specialization and improvement of physicians of the young state considering new character and scales of Public Health problems, expanding of the Departments of surgical structure, interest of the Administration in centralized management of the scientific departments of the Institute, as well as the necessity for expansion of specialized training of physicians in surgical subjects.

The Deans of the College of Surgery from the beginning of its foundation were Professor of the Department of Otorinolaringology D.M. Rutenburg (1936-1938), Associate Professor of the Department of Eye Diceases A.A. Gastev (1938-1945 ). In post-war years (1945-1962) the College was headed by Professor of the Department of Operative Surgery A.N. Zebold, Associate Professor of the Department of Operative Surgery N.C. Korotkevitch, Professor of the Department of Surgery N 2 R.V. Zvorykin, Head of the Department of Toracal Surgery Professor S.A. Gajiev. Further the College was headed by Associate Professor of the Department of Gnathic - Facial Surgery V.A. Dunaevsky (1962-1969), Head of the Department of Surgery N 2 Professor A.G. Zemlyanoy (1969-1976 ) Head of the Department of Surgery N 1 Professor V.P. Zinevich (1976-1991), Head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics Professor V.A. Nevernov (1991-1992), Head of the Department of Otorinolaringology Professor V.I. Linkov (1992-1997), Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine Professor A.G. Miroshnichenko (1997-1998), Professor of the Department of Surgery named after N.D. Monastyrsky V.P. Zemlyanoy (since 1998 till present).

The College executes all tasks assigned to it by the Charter of the Academy and stated about the College, approved by the Scientific Council of the Academy.

The basis of the College's work consists of collective administration of its activity (acceptance of basic solutions of Council of College and Methodological Council) and realization of its main tasks by organization of constant interaction between the Departments in different issues of their activities.

During the last 5 years there were significant modifications in the structure of the College. If, in 1994 its structure included 23 Departments, in recent years their number was moderated.

In 1995 the Departments of Andrology and Urology in the Department of Urology and Andrology, the Departments of Surgical Hepatology and Surgery N 3 in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Hepatology were transformed.

In 1997 in the course of organization of the College of Surgery the Departments of Gnathic-Facial Surgery, Orthopedic and Therapeutic Dentistry, Eye Diceases and the Department of Otorinolaringology were exited from structure of the College. The Department of Emergency Medicine entered the structure of the College; the Departments of Vascular and Cardiosurgery were merged in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery.

In 1998 the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Department of Abdominal Surgery were merged in the Department of Surgery, which was given the name of N.D. Monastyrsky; the Departments of Oncology and Clinical Radiology were reorganized in the Department of Oncology with the Course of Clinical Radiology. After liquidation of the Department of Extrapulmonal Tuberculosis a number of its members were transferred to the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics, then it has received a title of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics with the Course of Vertebrology.

Now the structure of the College includes 15 Departments. It is supposed that the further improvement of educational and methodical work will be long term and conducted by means of introducing new forms of teaching activity, organization and carrying out of new educational courses, further computerization of educational process. In scientific and medical activities there will be development and improvement of new medical technologies and their active introduction in educational process and practical Public Health. In the international activity - expansion of international contacts on the basis of community of scientific, educational and methodical concerns of the Departments. In personnel selection - active training of young experts adapted to teaching and scientific activity in modern conditions.

The Department was formed in 1935. The Department was formed in 1928. Till 1969 it was called the Department of Surgery N 2. In 1969-1986 it was the Department of Surgery N 1; from 1986 to 1995 - the Department of Surgery N 1 with the Course of Thermal Defeats. Since a 1995 the Department of Emergency Surgery has carried out courses of general and thematic improvement for the doctors - surgeons on urgent surgery of organs of thoracal and abdominal cavities, as well as certificate courses in speciality "Surgery". The main scientific directions are: study and develop the new methods of treatment of patient with peritonitis and acute pancreatitis, and also with acute ulceration of mucosa of stomach and duodenal intestine. The Department was formed in 1931. The opening of the independent Department of Oncology was held in 1944. The Department provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement for oncologists, surgeons and gynecologists. The Department was formed in 1920. Since 1885 the course of operations on corpses has been conducted. The Department provides training in the courses of general improvement for clinical interns and interns on the following subjects: "Fundamentals of Surgery", "Microsurgery"; certificate courses "Surgery"; courses of thematic improvement on purulent surgery, proctology, surgery of the thyroid gland. At the Department mixed teaching for trainees of all the Departments of surgical profile is provided. The Department was formed in 1885 as the Clinic of Surgery of the Clinical Institute for Improvement of Physicians. Since 1959 it has been called the Department of Thoracal Surgery and Anesthesiology. In 1964-1976 it was the Department of Thoracal Surgery and Phthisiosurgery; since 1976 it is the Department of Thoracal Surgery with the Course of Surgical Pulmanology. It provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement for thoracal surgeons, surgeons - oncologists, phthisiosurgeons, general surgeons, traumatologists, pulmalnologists, phthisiatrists, roentgenologists, as well as certificate courses in speciality "Thoracal Surgery". Training in speciality "Orthopedics" at the Institute has started since 1912 as a private course organized by Professor R.R. Vreden. In 1934 at the Institute the regular associate professor program on orthopedics was initiated, the head of which was appointed - Professor M.I. Kuslik. In 1937 the associate professor program on orthopedics was reorganized in the Department of Orthopedics, and in 1945 the course of prosthetic repair had started. Since 1966 the Department of Orthopedics and Prosthetic Repair has been transformed to the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics. The Head of the Department was elected - the honored scientist of RSFSR Professor A.V. Vorontzov, who headed the Department until 1991. In this connection the practical basis of the Department was extended alongside with the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after R.R. Vreden and the Institute of Prosthetic Repair named after G.A. Albrecht. Trauma departments of hospitals N 1, 4, 26 were used for teaching. In 1998 the course of Vertebrology was included in structure of the Department, headed by Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, State premium holder S.A. Tikchodeev. Now the basements of the Department are Russian Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after R.R. Vreden and Clinical multi-profile hospital N 2, fitted up with the modern equipment, instrumentarium, labs and the best operational rooms in the country, which allow to apply the up-to-date technologies in case of affections and diseases of locomotorium - endoprosthetics repair of joints and defects of bones, plastic and reconstruction operations on hands with microsurgical engineering, invasive surgical interference, transpedicular osteosynthesis and plastics of skew fields in case of traumas and diseases of spinal column. The modern methods of teaching, the newest world technologies in traumatology and orthopedics - endoprosthetics repair of large joints (coxofemoral, knee and humeral) are widely introduced at the Department, the active training of physicians and scientific workers from different countries (Syria, Lebanon, Nigeria, Poland, Kuwait, Pakistan, Tadjikistan, Georgia, Armenia, etc.) is conducted. The joint scientific and medical work with the leading orthopedists of Germany, France, Norway and the USA is improving. The main scientific directions are: development of reconstruction operations in case of affections and diseases of locomotorium; endoprosthetics repair of joints. During 5 years over 10 thousand physicians - trainees passed the improvement programs, 28 Candidates (Ph.D.) and 11 Doctors of Medical Science were trained, more then 100 authorized certificates and patents in construction and original methods of operations were received.

The First Department of Surgery was formed in 1885 by Professor Nestor D. Monastyrsky, who headed it until 1888. In the following years the Department was headed by G.F. Tilling, N.V. Sklifosofsky, N.N. Petrov, S.S. Girgolav and V.A. Oppel. In 1933 from the structure of this Department (initiative of N.N. Petrov) the Department of Emergency Surgery (Department of Surgery N 2) was excluded, and became headed by C.S. Kagan. Further, according to the structure of work, the Department was renamed in the Department of Abdominal Surgery. Till 1998 the Department was headed by: N.I. Blinov (1952-1969), A.G. Zemlyanaya (1969-1992), A.I. Bugayev (1992-1996), N.I. Glushkov (1996-1998). Then this Department has undergone the series of changes. In 1977 the Department of Surgery N 3 with the course of Endoscopy (the Head was A.I. Gorbashko) was organized. In 1986 under the Department of Abdominal Surgery headed by A.E. Borisov the course of Surgical Hepatology was developed, which in 1993 was reorganized in the independent Department of Surgical Hepatology, and in 1995 there was a merge of this Department and the Department of Surgery N 3 with further formation of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Last one in 1998 was merged with the Department of Abdominal Surgery. In 1999 the Department was given the name of N.D. Monastyrsky. The main scientific directions of the Department are: study and development of the new methods of treatment of peptic ulcer, swellings of gastrointestinal tract, diseases of biliary tracts, focal and diffuse diseases of liver; development of reconstructive interference on organs of gastrointestinal tract; development and introduction of endovideosurgical devices in case of different diseases of organs of abdominal cavity and gastrointestinal tract; study and development of methods of treatment of surgical complications in case of infectious diseases. The Department provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement: "Surgery. Training and Taking Examination on the Certificate of Expert", "Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Lliver Diseases, Biliary Tracts and Pancreas", "Surgical Complications of Infectious Diseases and Infections in Surgery", "Laporoscopic Surgery of Organs of Abdominal Cavity" for the surgeons with the experience not less then 5 years and "Diagnostic Laparoscopy", as well as the course "Surgery. A Combined Course of Training of Young Experts". During the last 5 years more than 700 physicians, 15 candidates (Ph.D.) and 7 Doctors of Medical Science were trained at the Department. 5 monographs, 3 educational manuals, 1 scientific and practical manual, 3 Department's collections of scientific works and 217 articles were published.

The Department was formed in 1988, when it was excluded from the structure of the Department of Surgery N 3 with the course of Endoscopy. It provides training in the courses of general and thematic improvement for endoscopists, surgeons, gastroenterologists, pulnomologists; training at clinical studies and postgraduated courses, as well as certificate courses in speciality "Endoscopy". The main scientific directions are: diagnosis, medical and operative endoscopy of organs of gastrointestinal tract and both diagnosis and medical endoscopy of bronch. For the last 5 years 750 specialists of Public Health, 5 candidates (Ph.D.) and 2 Doctors of Medical Science were trained at the Department.
