St.-Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies is one of the leading
educational institutions in the postgraduate system of education in Russia.
The Academy trains experts in the postgraduate programs of professional education
in:
- postgraduate courses;
- doctoral courses;
- residency.
A number of scientific schools have been formed at the Academy led by: the
corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences V.A. Kozlov,
S.A. Simbirtsev, O.K. Khmelnitskiy; the member of the Russian Academy of Engineering
Science U.A. Fedorov, the member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences
V.M. Retnev, academicians and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences
and Arts named after Peter the Great V.P. Alferov, V.A. Mikhailovitch, M.A.
Repina, V.A. Kozlov, M.S. Kushakovsky, V.I. Mazurov, and many other professors
and Heads of different departments.
Research and development activities in the Academy are carried out by 700 lecturers
and scientific specialists of high qualification. Because of St.-Petersburg
MAPS staff is participation in local and foreign exhibitions and conferences,
carrying out Russian and international symposiums, regular visits of the experts
to different countries, the Academy acquires broad popularity. Scientific development
causes true interest of foreign experts. Having entered the second century of
its history, the Academy is working on implementation of the new progressive
organization forms of medical research, concentrating scientific potential on
implementation of the large socially significant programs and areas of forming
a healthy way of life, motherhood and childhood protection, body recovering
after chronic illnesses, protection of human body from harmful effects produced
by the environment, social and medical rehabilitation.
The Academy is starting to do the research in the new directions such as AIDS,
bio-management for correction of infringed human body functions, study of surgery
gears and effective methods of treatment, development of new ways of medical
aid organization for population in changeable conditions. The Academy actively
trains scientific - pedagogical staff. Since 1935 Academy's employees have defended
about 400 post-doctoral and 1700 doctoral theses. 55 Heads of different institutes
and 327 department managers have been trained. At the specialized councils the
defending of doctoral and candidate theses on mycology, surgery, anaesthesiology,
pathological physiology, cardiology, internal diseases, endocrinology, pathological
anatomy, hygiene, genetic disorders, dentistry, neuropathology and other specialities
is carried out.
