According to the plan, annually approved by the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation, the professional training and improvement of professional skills of the medical and pharmaceutical workers in the short-term courses is carried out in the Academy.

The purpose of professional training (specialization) is acquiring additional skills and knowledge, which are necessary for fulfillment of a new kind of professional activity on the expert post. The professional training (specialization) is organized in the form of the course not less then 3.5 months (500 hours) in duration. Physicians are trained in residency and postgraduate courses in the presence of the Certificate of the appropriate basic qualification.

The purpose of improvement of professional skills is updating of theoretical knowledge and practical skills of experts according to the demands of the state educational standards.

The improvement of professional skills is carried out as required, but not less than once in 5 years. The employer establishes periodicity of passing the professional skills' improvement course by the experts.

The improvement of professional skills is organized and carried out in the form of courses of general and thematic improvement, as well as the courses with the training purpose. They can be short-term (not less then 72 hours) or long-term (more then 100 hours) courses.

The purpose of improvement courses (general or thematic) is the further improvement of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional approach for maintaining a high modern training level on a definite specialty.

Tutoring on general courses has the main aim of systematic study of theoretical and practical problems of a specialty or its sections, and also philosophical problems of biology and medicine, problems of medical service of the civil defense and military-medical improvement.

Training on a thematic course is carried out with the purpose of studying the specific actual theoretical problems or acquiring practical skills.

The basic purposes of training are forming and applying into practice professional knowledge, skills received as a result of theoretical training, acquiring of professional and managerial skills for carrying out jobs undertaken or higher positions; maintaining high modern professional standard by the training proficiency in definite skills and skills of independent operation in different areas of public health services.

Since 1996, the courses for public health workers for examination to receive of the Expert's Certificate in different specialities of the affirmed nomenclature (Order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation from 27.08.1999 N337), are carried out in the Academy. The experts with higher and secondary medical education, studied at residency and possessing experience of working in the field, can take these courses.

The medical and pharmaceutical workers accepted to take these courses, have to show the application for the admission to delivery of a qualifying examination, copy of the diploma, duplicate of the certificates about passing improvement of professional skill, statement from the work-record card, granting from a place of the basic work with an estimation of practical skills of the expert.

Professional training (specialization) and improvement of professional skills is carried out on the state budget basis (within the framework of the affirmed industrial practice plan), as well as for payment from the students (places, selected additionally to the plan; the most deficient courses). Payment for the education for Russian citizens starts from 2500 rubles for one month of tutoring depending on a speciality and can be indexed. For the foreigners it starts from 200 US dollars at the rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation valid at the date of payment. Medical and pharmaceutical workers, who went through professional training and improvement of professional skill, get documents of a stated form.
